Drew Nelson Legacy Project Benefit Concert
The Brethren of LOL 781 recently attended a benefit concert held in aid of the Drew Nelson Legacy Project an initiative in memory of former Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland's Grand Secretary, the late Bro. Drew Nelson.
The Loyal Order’s objective is to permanently recognise the contribution of one of its most high-profile members, whilst benefiting the next generation of community leaders. The project aims to majorly expand the Orange Institution's current student provision in the university area of Belfast, with the ultimate aim of creating a standalone ‘Drew Nelson Centre’ providing meeting space and accommodation for student members. It has also appointed a designated development officer to provide career advice and guidance to young people across Northern Ireland and the border counties.
The benefit concert was organised by the three Donaghadee Orange Lodges, LOL 241, LOL 781 and LOL 836 and was held in the Meadowbank Social & Recreational Club in Donaghadee on Tuesday 20th November 2018. The concert featured performances from Kirkistown Pipe Band from Cloughey, Harbour Star Accordion Band, Flutes & Drums Flute Band and Donaghadee Fife and Drumming Club all from Donaghadee. There was a good turn out of supporters who all enjoyed the excellent performances given by all the contributors and a member of the Project's committee gave a short talk on the aims and objectives of the Project and also paid tribute to the work of the late Bro. Drew Nelson on behalf of the Orange Institution. Everyone in attendance including the performers had a great night and felt it was an event which we should consider organising on an annual basis.
